What you should do

Stop using the fridge freezer immediately: the defrost element can overheat and cause a fire

Check your model number on the appliance rating plate (inside the fridge door)

Contact B&Q customer service or return the unit to your local store for a full refund or replacement

If you purchased online, B&Q will arrange collection at no cost to you

Keep your receipt if possible, but B&Q should be able to trace your purchase via card payment records

Your rights

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 (s.9–10), goods must be of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose, and a fire-risk appliance fails both

Under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005, B&Q has a legal obligation to recall unsafe products

You are entitled to a full refund regardless of how long ago you purchased

If the appliance caused damage (scorch marks, fire, smoke damage), you may have a separate claim for consequential losses

If B&Q refuses or delays your refund, you can escalate to Trading Standards or use EvenStance to generate a complaint letter

Need help getting your refund?

EvenStance can generate a complaint letter citing the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and General Product Safety Regulations. Motor finance (PCP and HP) claims are free, and so is checking any other case. Quick Resolution is £9.99 once for a straightforward case, and Starter is £19.99 a month.
